The original house at Brekkeseter was built in 1772 and is today a cozy living room with an open fireplace. Underneath the roof, you will find the letters “J.O.S 1772” scratched with a knife. Which stands for Jakop Olsen 1772. Jakob Olsen’s father was the first independent farmer on the big farm Jørundstad, which owned Brekkeseter. For over a hundred years the farm has belonged to Gjestling family and have been “crown property” or “Church property”. The history ended suddenly on July 31, 1789 when the farm was torn away by “Storofsen” – a flood in the valley. People and animals survived Storofsen because they were at their seasonal summer farms (“seter”) in the mountains  when the flood razed through the valley and took everything with it. Later the family bought the farm Brekka in Sel and moved there. Some say the name Brekkeseter comes from the farm “Brekka”, others mean the name come from the location in the terrain; on the “breach” between the village and wild nature.
